The Skywalker Saga Begins

The first entry in the Star Wars franchise, A New Hope, made its theatrical debut in 1977, introducing filmgoers to the biggest science-fiction event that they had ever experienced. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), an unassuming farm boy from the planet Tatooine, finds himself embroiled in the Galactic Civil War after he comes into contact with the droids C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), the latter of whom is carrying the plans to the Empire’s new super weapon, the Death Star.

His uncle and aunt murdered by stormtroopers, Luke joins Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness), revealed to be the former Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, on his mission to deliver the plans to the Rebels on Alderaan. However, the Empire’s loyal subject Darth Vader (David Prowse / James Earl Jones) is one step ahead of them, having destroyed the planet and captured its princess, Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). With the help of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), the pair must rescue the princess, take the plans to the rebels, and destroy the Death Star.

Unsurprisingly, this tale of heroism set in a visually captivating world resonated with audiences, and the franchise was expanded with multiple sequels and prequels (not to mention TV series, books, and video games). These projects explore the time of the Galactic Republic and the period after the Empire’s fall, showing fans the origins of Darth Vader and the First Order (the successor to the Empire).
